It's been a while since I've posted about anything, but that happens when you get busy. I myself have been dealing with the idea that the friends I thought I knew were not on the same page with me when it came to racial discrimination and cultural appropriation. I've also been dealing with the idea that it's only the past couple of years where I've begun to realize that no matter how much talent I have and how easy going I am, people have no problem labeling me as 'that quirky black girl.'
Well, in truth I am that quirky black girl, and I love me. I've just never had to question it until now.
BUT existential crisis is over, and I have come back to 'Homecoming' doing my best to wrap it up and move on to making more films.
Firstly, we finally were able to get all of our Indiegogo rewards out to the people who supported us. That's been a huge relief off my back. I need people to know that I am so grateful for their support, and though it's been a long road, I hope they enjoy their rewards.
Secondly, we've (Homecoming) have been accepted into two film festivals!!!
I understand now more than ever that the film is very niche and it deals with a lot of issues that should be mainstream at this point but still aren't, and that's okay. I just have to know where my audience is and cater to them. That's what good marketing is all about.
The Minneapolis Underground Film Festival and the International Black Women's Film Festival are great places to showcase the film. I couldn't be happier.
There are a few other film festivals we have yet to hear from, but honestly, my goal was to get the film into one.
Just one film festival.
I've now surpassed that, so I can move on happy learning from my mistakes and taking away nothing but positive feelings from this experience.
I'm working on another film at the moment, well, I should say other projects as there isn't just one, but hopefully I'm making something equally interesting even though it's quite different.
Reviewing movies. I tried to go to once a week, but I think it's best if I post whenever. Right?
